Assembly

How to build your dome.

This guide takes you through the process of assembling your dome from start to finish. Each step provides guidance on the necessary actions, the required components, and our recommended tips to keep each step as simple as possible. If you need any support during the assembly, you can get in touch with us. We're more than happy to help talk you through the process.

Preparing your space

  • Make sure you have a space of at least 5.5m by 5.5m to build your dome. Ensure that the ground type is completely level to ensure that the door will function correctly.
  • Take extreme care when unpacking. Some parts are packaged under tension, so will spring apart when opened. These parts are labelled with a warning sticker. When opening these parts, point them away from your face and other people.
  • A stepladder may be useful during the build, so have this to hand before you get started.
  • You may find it helpful to lay out all the panels prior to starting the assembly. Each panel has a unique number engraved at the top (the numbers can be found at one end of any strips). These numbers need to always be readable from the outside of the dome.
  • Screws can be tightened by hand, though we do provide a screwdriver to help you do this. An electric screwdriver can be used, but always ensure you are using the lowest torque setting to prevent over-tightening the screws as this can cause damage to the screw-threads and panels.
  • We recommend 2+ people for an easier and faster assembly experience.
  • To reduce fingerprints on the panels during assembly, the plastic protection can be removed at the end, just make sure to remove it from the screw holes (on both sides of the panel) as you go.

Step by step guidance

1

Take strips 001-008 and lay them in order, ensuring 008 is placed where you want your door to be located.

NB: Make sure the numbers on the strips are readable from the outside of the dome.

Step 1 — Lay base strips
2

Secure these strips together using the L-shape brackets. The remaining brackets are placed in the middle of these strips. Make sure the brackets sit on the inside of the dome. Use the four highest holes on each bracket.

Step 2 — Secure with L-shape brackets
3

Taking panels 009-023, start attaching these in numerical order, starting from the right hand side of the dome and working anti-clockwise. Make sure to only put a single screw in the centre hole of each panel, to avoid having to remove screws when adding panels in later steps.

Step 3 — Attach panels 009-023
4

Prepare panels 026, 029, 032 and 035, which make up your retractable windows. To do this, stack the components on the inside of the panel so that the window pushes outwards. Make sure to use longer screws where highlighted so you can fit the locking clips on top.

Tip: Don't over-tighten the long screws as you want to ensure the clips can twist back and forth.
Step 4 — Prepare retractable windows
5

Attach panels 024-037, which includes the four window panels you've just constructed. These will slot directly into the gaps left by the last row. Ensure to only put screws in the bottom five holes.

Step 5 — Attach panels 024-037
6

Attach panels 038-052, continuing in the anti-clockwise pattern as before. Ensure to put screws only in the locations shown in the reference diagrams.

Step 6 — Attach panels 038-052
7

Attach panels 053-066, continuing in the anti-clockwise pattern as before.

Step 7 — Attach panels 053-066
8

Attach panels 067-081.

NB: You may find the walls on either side of the door start to bend inwards. The polycarbonate can be flexed back into place later by pushing out from the inside.

Step 8 — Attach panels 067-081
9

Attach panels 082-095 into the gaps left from the previous row. Alternate between attaching in pairs and singles as the pattern requires.

Step 9 — Attach panels 082-095
10

Attach panels 096-105.

Step 10 — Attach panels 096-105
11

Select strips A1-A3 and place them one behind the other with the numbers facing out. With A1 at the front, followed by A2, then A3 at the back. Attach these strips to the inside of the left-hand side of the doorway, making sure the bottom edges are flush. Screw them in from the bottom upwards, but do not fix the final hole at the top corner yet.

Tip: Make sure to use long screws here. It may help to attach the top and bottom screw holes first to stabilise the strips before securing the rest.
Step 11 — Attach door strips A1-A3
12

Repeat this process on the right hand-side of the door with panels B1-B3, stopping before the final hole on the top corner.

Step 12 — Attach door strips B1-B3
13

Attach panels 106-114 where shown.

Step 13 — Attach panels 106-114
14

Attach panels 115-124 in pairs in the gaps left from the last row.

Step 14 — Attach panels 115-124
15

Prepare your window vent panels, numbers 125, 126, 127, and 128, ensuring the vents are attached to the outside of the panel.

Tip: Secure the screws from the top of the vent, working downwards, bending the panel slightly if necessary.
Step 15 — Prepare vent panels
16

Attach the vent panels 125-128 that you just constructed in the locations shown.

Step 16 — Attach vent panels
17

Attach panels 129-133 either side of the vent panels.

Step 17 — Attach panels 129-133
18

Attach panels 134-137 either side of the vent panels.

Step 18 — Attach panels 134-137
19

Align strips A4-A6 with numbers facing out, A4 at the front. Connect these where A1-A3 end. A4 is the shortest strip, connecting where A1 ends at the front.

NB: Use long screws.

Step 19 — Attach door strips A4-A6
20

Repeat this process again on the right side of the door with strips B4-B6.

Step 20 — Attach door strips B4-B6
21

Attach panels 138 at the very top of the dome.

Step 21 — Attach panel 138 at top
22

Attach your next panel working towards the front, 139, ensuring the top is slid under the bottom of panel 138.

Step 22 — Attach panel 139
23

Attach panel 140, again ensuring the top is slid under the bottom of panel 139.

Step 23 — Attach panel 140
24

To complete the dome, attach 141 ensuring the top is slid under the bottom of panel 140.

Step 24 — Attach panel 141
25

Prepare the door by attaching the crossbars using the small screws.

Step 25 — Prepare the door
26

Slide the door in from the back of the dome, pulling it forward into place. Attach the U-shaped door bar at the bottom to complete the assembly.

Step 26 — Install the door

Anchoring

How to anchor your dome

GeoDomeXL must be secured to a solid surface to ensure stability in varying conditions. The recommended method depends on the type of ground you're anchoring to:

Wood, Composite, Decking

  • +50mm screws

Stone, Brick, Concrete, Paving, Tile

  • +50mm screws
  • Rawl plugs

Step by step guidance

Regardless of the ground type you are anchoring your GeoDomeXL to, the following steps remain the same. Note, if you are anchoring your dome into stone, brick, concrete, paving slabs, tile, etc, you may need to drill pilot holes prior to inserting the screws. Also, be careful to ensure the surface you are anchoring your dome to is completely level around the circumference of your base otherwise door function may be affected.

1

First, measure from the door threshold to the back of the dome ensuring the door is positioned where you want it. Ensure the distance from back to front of the dome is equal to 495cm. You can then secure 008 (door threshold) and the back bracket to the ground.

Anchoring step 1 — Measure front to back
2

Next, measure from left to right across the width of the dome. This measurement should equal 505cm. Secure the brackets opposite each other either side of the dome.

Anchoring step 2 — Measure left to right
3

Now go around the dome and secure the remaining brackets ensuring the dome has a consistent round shape.

Tip: Only drive the screws in halfway at each bracket, until each bracket is in place, allowing for adjustments as you go.
4

Once you have a screw/pin in every bracket, check the dimensions are correct. The left to right dimension should be 505cm, whilst the back to front dimensions should be 495cm. Once correct, go ahead and ensure each screw is completely secure.

Anchoring step 4 — Final check and secure

Troubleshooting

If after you have anchored your dome you are finding common issues like the door not functioning correctly (falling out or sticking), or bulges in the domes shape, the following checks should help to solve any issues:

  • Ensure the ground is level all the way around the domes circumference making sure there are no raised or sunken areas in the floor affecting the dome's shape.
  • Ensure the inside diameter of the dome is 505cm from opposite sides, left to right.
  • Ensure the inside front to back diameter of the dome is 495cm.
  • If the door is still sliding too freely or is gripping too much, unscrew part 008 (the doorway threshold) and move it in or out slightly before re-screwing. This helps to reangle the door profiles, loosening or tightening the door as needed.

00:35 - Microfibre Wipe Down

00:50 - Hose Down

Prevention

The first step to maintaining your GeoDomeXL is prevention. Keeping the space above your dome free from overhanging branches is a simple way to reduce any build up that may occur. We also recommend keeping the windows and doors closed when not in use.

Cleaning

GeoDomeXL can be cleaned easily using a soft micro fibre cloth and a mild detergent. Generally any mild soap or cleaner suitable for windows is best. If in doubt, check the label and ensure the product can be used on plastic, testing on an inconspicuous area of the dome first. Alternatively you can use a garden hose or a pressure washer (on the lowest setting) to hose down any stubborn marks.

Never use abrasive cleaners or cloths to clean GeoDomeX as this can lead to scratching.

Storing or relocating

Whilst GeoDomeXL is designed to withstand conditions all year round and does not need to be stored away during the winter, we know that there may be instances where you would want to disassemble or relocate your GeoDomeXL to a different location. GeoDomeXL can be easily disassembled, following the assembly instructions in reverse. If just moving the dome, it is possible to lift it from multiple points around the base with some helpers, without having to take the dome apart.
