How to build your flooring.

This guide takes you through the process of assembling your Garden Pod Floor from start to finish. Each step provides guidance on the necessary actions, the required components and our recommended tips to keep each step as simple as possible. We’re more than happy to help talk you through the process. If you need assistance during the process, feel free to reach out—we’re always happy to help guide you through it.

Preparing your space

We recommend building your Garden Pod Floor before starting on the assembly of your GeoDomeX. If however you have already built your dome, you may find it helpful to unscrew it from it’s current base first, as to better position the dome around the new Floor as you build. If your dome is already built make sure that you follow the steps outlined below within your dome, as this is easier than manoeuvring your dome into position over the top of the Floor later on. The edge panels of the Floor have cutouts which align with the L-shape brackets of your dome.
When choosing a location for your Flooring it’s important to consider the following things:

Ensure you have a space measuring at least 3.55m by 3.55m.

The ground needs to be solid and level so areas such as decking, concrete or paving work brilliantly.

Additionally, there are some further things to consider, before you get started:

You may find it helpful to lay out all of your pieces prior to starting your Floor build. Each of the irregular-shaped Floor edge pieces are uniquely numbered in numerical order, clockwise, from the left side of the door. Make sure you select the correct piece as you go. The centre hexagonal pieces are all identical, meaning they can be used interchangeably.

Each panel has pre-drilled holes where you need to secure it to the circular discs. You will see these at each corner of the panel, as well as at the joins between the edge pieces.

Take care when unpacking the boxes. Some parts are heavy and it is important to use correct lifting technique when manoeuvring such pieces in order to prevent injury.

Screws can be tightened with a manual screwdriver, however, this process is made a lot easier by using an electric screwdriver. When using the electric screwdriver, make sure the torque setting is suitable, to avoid over-tightening the screws and damaging the screw threads and panels.

The Garden Pod Floor is built from the front of the dome towards the back, row by row. When adding the next row, you may find it easier to fix the circular discs under the pieces already in place before sliding the next panel in and screwing it down.

You may find it helpful to use a rubber mallet to ‘persuade’ floor panels into place and assist in ensuring everything is tightly fitted together.

Step by step guidance

1. Before starting the floor assembly, flip each hexagonal centre Floor piece over and attach a circular disc in the middle. Do not overtighten the screws, ensuring its head does not protrude through the other side.

NB: You may find it easier to complete this step as you go, attaching each disc before placing the centre Floor panel down.

2. When you have ensured that your area is flat and level, place down your waterproof membrane in your space. You will be building the Floor directly on top of this.

NB: There is no need to attach this to the ground at this stage.

3. Take the door underfloor piece and place it where you want your door to be situated. Ensure the waterproof membrane extends approximately 7cm beyond this piece.

4. Fold the protruding waterproof membrane up and over the door underfloor piece. Then, take pieces 17 and 18 and place these on top aligning centrally with the front edge of the piece underneath.

N.B. Ensure the position of the panels match the reference diagram.

5. Screw pieces 18 and 17 down, trapping the waterproof membrane between the edge pieces and the door underfloor piece creating a neat edge.

6. Place a circular disc under the joint where the two panels meet at the top center. Leave part of the disc exposed to attach the panel above. Once positioned, secure it by screwing through the panel into the disc below.

7. Taking pieces 01 and 16, position these on the relevant sides and attach these in the same way to the discs underneath. You may find it helpful to slide the disc into place under the first panel before slotting the adjoining panel into place.

8. Continue on to the next row, starting with piece 02 on the left hand side.

9. Add three of the hexagonal panels in a line in the middle, slotting them into each other and screwing down each join as you go.

10. Finish this row with panel 15.

11. Continue to the following row, starting with panel 03, followed by four of the middle panels, and finishing with panel 14 on the right.

12. Continue to the next row back, starting with panel 04, followed by five middle panels, and finishing with panel 13 on the right.

13. On the next row back from left to right, start with panel 05, followed by four middle panels, finishing with panel 12.

14. Repeat this process with the next row from left to right, starting with panel 06, followed by three middle panels, and finishing with panel 11.

15. To complete the floor, attach the final edge pieces 07-10.

This completes the assembly of your Flooring. You need to complete the assembly of your GeoDomeX before completing the next steps.
If you haven’t yet assembled your GeoDomeX, follow the instructions in The Complete Guide, included in your dome’s packaging or available on our support site. Once assembled, align the L-shaped brackets with the designated cut-outs around the Flooring.

Anchoring Options for Your GeoDomeXL

There are two methods available to anchor your dome with the Flooring:

Brackets Under the Floor Panels

(Recommended for permanent setups)

1. Unscrew the floor panel covering each bracket.


2. Secure the bracket to the ground following instructions in ‘The Complete Guide’.


3. Replace and reattach the panel before moving to the next bracket.

Brackets Outside the Dome

(Alternative option)

1. Slide the brackets down and under the lip of the dome so they can be attached to the dome from the inside, but anchored to the ground from the outside.


2. Anchor them to the ground following the instructions in ‘The Complete Guide’.

If your GeoDomeX is already assembled with the Flooring positioned inside and everything is anchored down, you can proceed to the final steps.

16. Now that your dome is positioned around the Floor, it’s important to make sure the waterproof membrane curls up the sides of your Floor and sits between the edge of the Flooring and the internal ring at the bottom of the dome. This ensures the Floor is completely protected from any moisture that may work its way underneath.

17. Depending on the anchoring method you choose, ensure the L-shaped brackets sit underneath the waterproof membrane. Alternatively, if you decide to anchor by securing the brackets on the outside of the dome, ensure the membrane sits between the Floor’s edge and the dome where the brackets are positioned.

Aftercare

How to look after your floor.

Looking after your Garden Pod Floor is simple, with little maintenance needed over the years. This section provides you with all you need to know regarding cleaning and caring for your Flooring, ensuring it lasts you for many years to come.

Prevention

The first step to maintaining your Floor is prevention. When assembling your Floor, it’s important to make sure that the waterproof membrane is correctly in position around the edge of the Floor to ensure it’s water tight. We also recommend ensuring the door and windows are kept shut when the dome is not in use, to keep any external debris from accumulating on the Floor.

Cleaning

The Garden Pod Floor is simple to keep clean, either by regular sweeping or using a mild floor detergent and a microfibre cloth. Before using any cleaner, check that it is suitable for use on varnished wood, testing on an inconspicuous area of the Floor first. You may also choose to wax the Floor using a suitable floor wax to maintain the varnish and keep it lasting longer.

Customisation

The Floor pieces are pre-treated and coated with a UV resistant wood varnish. However, if you would like to change the colour of the flooring, we recommend following these steps:

Gently sand down each floor panel to remove the existing varnish. It’s essential that you use a fine sanding block/paper so that you don’t leave deep scratches in the wood, instead just roughing up the surface ready for new varnish.

Once sanded back, apply a UV resistant wood varnish in the colour of your choice to the panels. It’s vital that this varnish is UV resistant, or the sun will discolour the panels overtime.

Storing or relocating

Whilst GeoDomeX and the Garden Pod Floor are designed to withstand conditions all year round and do not need to be stored away during the winter, we know that there may be instances where you would want to dis-assemble your dome or relocate it to a different area. The Garden Pod Floor can be easily dis-assembled, following the assembly instructions in reverse order.
